For the public

Psychologists are scientifically trained experts in psychological functioning and human behavior. They obtain their qualification by completing a 5-year university degree in psychology with at least 300 ECTS.

Psychologists work in very different professional fields such as clinical psychology, in school settings and education, in workplace environment, in the social sector or as an expert witness in court.

Psychologists offer you professional assistance in a wide variety of areas to help you deal with your problems efficiently !

Clinical psychologists are specifically trained in the field of mental disorders. Many of them are also accredited as psychotherapist.

The profession of psychologist is incomprehensibly not yet legally regulated in Luxembourg!

Psychiatrists are physicians who have specialized in the field of psychiatry after completing their medical studies. The profession of physician is regulated by law.

Psychotherapists are psychologists or physicians (mostly psychiatrists) with additional training in psychotherapy recognized by the state. The practice of psychotherapy is protected by legal accreditation.

Clinical psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists will help you to deal with mental disorders and illnesses, behavioral disturbance or any other problem causing psychological suffering or distress.

Their treatment aims to promote beneficial changes in the patient(s), particularly in cognitive, emotional or behavioral functioning, in the interpersonal system, in personality or in state of health.

Consultations with a psychologist

Unlike the majority of European countries and unlike other health professions in Luxembourg, consultations with a clinical psychologist or neuropsychologist on a self-employed basis are incomprehensively not reimbursed by the health insurance fund (CNS) !

In some public or state-approved institutions and hospitals, treatment is free or at reduced cost.

Children and teenagers can be covered free of charge by the Office national de l'enfance (ONE).

Some supplementary health insurance providers may offer partial reimbursement. Ask them for details.

Psychotherapy by a psychotherapist

Psychotherapeutic treatment is reimbursed by the Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS).

Psychotherapy is a targeted, professional and generally more extensive treatment of mental disorders and illnesses, behavioural disturbance or any other problem causing psychological suffering or distress using a psychotherapeutic method.

The treatment aims to promote beneficial changes in the patient(s), particularly in cognitive, emotional or behavioural functioning, in the interpersonal system, in personality or in state of health.

This treatment goes beyond the provision of psychological help to deal with current psychological issues, or counselling and support.

Common types of psychotherapy methods are f. ex. cognitive-behavioral therapies, systemic therapies, psychodynamic and humanistic approaches.

Clarify with your psychotherapist or psychologist whether psychotherapy is appropriate in your case.
